1,000 anthropologists descend on Bristol

4 October 2006

For one week, Bristol was 'the world capital of anthropology', when the University hosted the bi-annual conference of European Association of Social Anthropologists.

Concentrated around the Great Hall in the Wills Building, at its peak the EASA conference used a total of 36 break-out rooms, running around 100 parallel sessions over the conference's four days. 'Just for a week', said Dr Dimitrios Theodossopoulos, one of the meeting's hosts in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, 'Bristol was the world capital of anthropology, and it was wonderful to welcome so many well-known figures'.

Special lectures included a keynote address by Professor Jean Comaroff from the University of Chicago. The Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) held its AGM at the conference, with a guest lecture by Professor Piers Vitebsky from the University of Cambridge. The delegates were welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Eric Thomas at an opening wine reception, and the Dean of Arts, Professor Bob Fowler, represented the University at a dinner held by the RAI at Royal Fort House.
