Up to 300 budding young scientists will spend an afternoon at Bristol University on Wednesday, March 17 exploring and capturing the fun of chemistry through two action-packed lectures.
The event for sixth-formers on The hidden chemistry of consumer products is co-sponsored by the EPSRC Portfolio Partnership (LASER) within the University’s School of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The first lecture on Perfume, pampers and nicotine patches – is it really chemistry? will be given by Dr John Emsley from the University of Cambridge.
Drs Julian Eastoe and Jason Riley, both from the University’s School of Chemistry, will follow with a lecture entitled, The secret chemistry of the mobile phone.
Dr Shallcross, organiser of the event and Lecturer in Chemistry at Bristol University, said: ‘We are looking forward to welcoming the students to the School of Chemistry. It should be a really fun afternoon and a great way for the students to learn about chemistry. This is the first time we have run the event and hope it will be the first of many.’
