The 'Nomadic network' was developed and implemented by the University's Information Services Department to address the growing requirement for staff and students to access the University's network from their own computers and homes. It provides them with a direct and unhindered connection to on-line services and information.

More than 500 users are registered on the 'Nomadic network', including Elaine Langford, a contractor who lives in the Orkney Islands.

Elaine worked as a Senior Analyst/Programmer in the University's Computing Centre before moving to Westray in 2002. Thanks to the 'Nomadic network', living 700 miles from Bristol hasn't prevent her from continuing to work for the University part-time.

Elaine said: "I have a good working relationship with the people back in the office. I can phone if I need assistance and I keep in touch by e-mail. Westray is a world away from Bristol but I'm enjoying every minute of it."

Josh Howlett, Networking and Digital Communications Specialist at the University said: "We are delighted to have received the SCT Award for Excellence. The 'Nomadic network' is the product of several months' development involving many people within the University and it is very pleasing that their efforts have been recognised in this way. We intend to use the prize money to further improve the service for students."
