Up, up and away

A website developed by the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT) at Bristol University has been selected to receive an Award for Exemplary Online Learning Resources by Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT).

The Cameron Balloons virtual factory website, which is part of Biz/ed, has been chosen as an excellent learning resource for the Business Discipline and has been selected as a MERLOT Classics for 2002.

Visitors to the site can gain an insider's view of a real company and learn about various business functions in an interesting way. Each section of the "factory" has a variety of resources including an explanation of how that business function is carried out, some photos with questions, worksheets, relevant theories, and issues and problems faced by the company in that area.

Biz/ed is a free Internet service for students, teachers and lecturers in business and economics that provides them with real life examples that can help teach economic theory.

Biz/ed Research and Development Officer, Andy Beharrell, said: "The aim is to bring business theory to life for anyone who is interested in finding out about it.

"We have a lot of topical features that explain business theory to students, and there are resources there that can help teachers prepare lessons.

"We are well known in the business and economics community, but being selected for this award will help bring the material we offer to a wider audience."

The virtual factory can be found at www.bized.ac.uk/virtual/cb/welcome.htm
