University lab and campus visits – Teacher sign up
Teachers can request that whole class groups of students visit the University to take part in practical workshop sessions, attending interactive talks and use specialist UG state of the art scientific equipment such as Sim Man - hopefully inspiring the next generation of scientists!
Visits are free and prioritized for aspiring state schools and can be planned for a single workshop or several workshops to make up a half or whole day. Visits can also be combined with other activities such as campus tours or admissions talks.
Lab sessions available are:
Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
Learn about the biochemistry behind diabetes mellitus by performing experiments to determine whether a patient has Type I or Type II diabetes.
Genetics and dividing cells
Students will perform a series of experiments where by DNA will be extracted using a miniprep technique and then used to set up a PCR reaction. Amplified DNA will be digested using restriction enzymes and analysed using agarose gel electrophoresis.
Physiology of the heart and lungs
Explore the inner workings of the heart and lungs. Measure your own oxygen saturation and see the change in heart rate after exercise on the ECG machines.
Microbiology and immunology
Learn all about microbes, immunity and how the body fights infection, and use our UV hand gel to highlight the bacteria on the skin.
