Discover Hidden Histories and Iconic Spaces at the University of Bristol during Heritage Open Days

The University of Bristol is opening its doors on 20 and 21 September as part of the Nationwide Heritage Open Days to offer the public a rare glimpse behind the scenes of some of its most historic and unique spaces.

Many areas of the University are hosting something special as part of the programme. Here’s what’s happening on Campus.

 

Botanic Garden Open Day and Tours, Saturday 20 September, 10.00 am to 4.30 pm with tours at 11.00 am and 2.00 pm

Entry to the University of Bristol Botanic Garden will be free of charge to all visitors as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days. There will also be guided tours led by our expert team which will be a chance to hear the stories, science, and history behind the garden’s remarkable plants.

The Botanic Gardens will be open from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm with tours at 11.00 am and 2.00 pm. No booking is required.

Theatre Collection Tours, Saturday 20 September, Tours at 10.00 am, 11.00 am, 12.00 pm, 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm

The Theatre Collection’s stores and strong rooms are not usually open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to explore behind the scenes. The tour will include archival treasures on display, expert-led insights and Interactive displays and collections.

Tours will take place at 10.00 am, 11.00 am, 12.00 pm, 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm. You must have a pre booked ticket to take part in these tours.

Wills Memorial Building Tower Tours, Saturday 20 September, tours at 10.30 am, 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm

Take a tour of the Wills Memorial Building. See behind the grand facade and experience the splendour of this building.

Tours will take place at 10.30 am, 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm. No booking is required.

Wills Memorial Building EarthArt Exhibitions, Saturday 20 September, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

Visitors are invited to step inside the School of Earth Sciences EarthArt Gallery to explore the current exhibition ‘Collapsing Time’ by Steph Tudor. EarthArt brings together creatives and scientists to explore research topics and practices linked to environmental and earth sciences.

The exhibition is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. No booking is required.

Art & Horticulture walking tour of Royal Fort Gardens, Saturday 20 September, tour at 11.00 am

It’s rich in biodiversity and home to a big portion of the University’s public art. This short walking tour in and around RFG will lead us round four of the artworks from the public art collection and explore points of interest and horticultural features of the gardens.


The tour will take place at 11.00 am and you must have a pre booked ticket to take part in this tour.

Garden Grotto Tour at Goldney House, Sunday 21 September, tour at 11.00 am

Hidden within the beautiful grounds of Goldney Hall, this magical, shell-lined grotto is one of the university’s most captivating secrets. With intricate mosaics and a tranquil atmosphere, it’s the perfect escape from city life.

The tour will take place at 11.00 am and you must have a pre booked ticket to take part in this tour.
