School Seminar - The Art of Humour in Science Communication - Sophie Litherland

We are pleased to announce a School Seminar by Sophie Litherland on the topic of: The Art of Humour in Science Communication.

Abstract

The use of humour in scientific communication can be a delicate balance, but with the correct application can greatly enhance the message of the speaker as well as the receptiveness of the audience. Looking deeper, humour is also used to enforce narratives and legitimise the speaker through both relatability and giving an emotional connection.
By carefully employing joke writing techniques to be make science more engaging and accessible, this can in turn help to produce an active audience, increasing understanding and retention. This talk will focus on different mechanisms to enhance communication such as controlling rhetoric, narrative structure, and explore some of the psychology behind audience engagement.
