We are pleased to announce a School Seminar by Ian Renfrew on the topic of: Climate processes and change in the Nordic Seas - Sea ice, weather systems and ocean circulation.
Abstract:
The Nordic Seas are the headwaters of the Atlantic Ocean and where the densest waters of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation are formed via intense atmospheric forcing during cold-air outbreaks. Ian will review how climate change is affecting the Nordic Seas and the key atmosphere-ocean-ice processes that drive water mass modification and ocean circulation. Findings from a major international field campaign – the Iceland Greenland Seas Project – will be combined with climate model analysis to illustrate the workings of the climate system in this region, how it is changing and what the ramifications may be for European climate.
Bio:
Ian is a Professor of Meteorology at UEA, is currently Head of the School of Environmental Sciences and was previously Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on the climate system, in particular dynamical meteorology, oceanography, and climate processes. He leads field campaigns, most often using research aircraft, and state-of-the-art weather and climate modelling. He has particular expertise in atmosphere-ocean interactions, mesoscale weather systems, topographic flows and atmospheric boundary-layer processes in the polar and subpolar regions.
