Inaugural Lecture - ‘Some Models are Useful’: Learnings and Reflections on Reducing Risk from Volcanoes - Professor Jeremy Phillips

27 March 2024, 4.00 PM - 27 March 2024, 6.30 PM

Professor Jeremy Phillips, University of Bristol

Wills Memorial Building, Reception Room

We are pleased to welcome Professor Jeremy Phillips for his Inaugural Lecture on: ‘Some Models are Useful’ – Learnings and Reflections on Reducing Risk from Volcanoes.

Abstract:

Mathematical models are an important tool for forecasting the impacts of volcanic and other natural hazards. In this talk Jeremy will share examples and lessons learned from his research using models to reduce risk from volcanic activity. This includes using models to quantify new observations of volcanic activity and as operational tools for early warning and decision-making during volcanic crises, and co-producing models with at-risk communities to help understand their responses to hazards, bring their experiences into risk governance, and highlight their capacities as knowledge creators.

Attendance is free, booking required via Eventbrite.
