Geoff Kilgour, GNS Science, New Zealand
Wills Memorial Building, G8
We are pleased to announce a HotStuff seminar by Geoff Kilgour on the topic of: Gas-driven volcanic eruptions in New Zealand - a review and analysis.
Abstract:
Gas-driven volcanic eruptions occur far more frequently than magmatic or phreatomagmatic events, yet they are extremely difficult to forecast, their geological record is rapidly eroded, and their impacts can be significant. Using historical accounts in New Zealand, the last 150 years has seen periods of intense gas-driven eruptive activity that has caused dozens of fatalities, injuries, and property damage. In this talk, Geoff will provide a brief history of gas-driven eruptions in New Zealand, show how monitoring data is used to explore some of their pre-eruptive signals, use footage to derive eruption dynamics, and explore some of the new ways in which we are trying to understand their initiation.
