Bringing volcanology and meteorology closer together for better multi-hazard warnings: possible ways forward - Dr Andrew Tupper

We look forward to welcoming Dr Andrew Tupper to Earth Sciences to talk on the topic of: Bringing volcanology and meteorology closer together for better multi-hazard warnings – possible ways forward.

Abstract:

The interface between volcanic hazards and meteorology provides a fascinating and complex problem for providing seamless warning services. Efforts to bridge this space have largely been focused on aviation warning services for volcanic ash, as a result of the dangers to safe travel and economic operation during volcanic events. But there are other volcanic hazards of equal or greater concern that also need meteorological input, such as ashfall, lahars (volcanic mudflows), and even rainfall-induced lava dome collapses. How can we systematically and globally progress these areas in response to the UN Early Warnings for All challenge? This talk will suggest some ways forward, following discussions at the 2023 IAVCEI Scientific Assembly earlier this year.
