We are very pleased to welcome Professor Tamsin Mather to give a HotStuff seminar on the topic of: Volcanoes and their impacts on Earth's environment - from fuming vents to extinction events.

Abstract:

Earth has experienced volcanism since its beginnings and it has shaped our planet's environment. Volcanoes have been key in creating and maintaining our planet's habitability, but can also be deadly natural hazards and volcanic episodes are implicated in some of the greatest environment crises in Earth’s history. This talk will explore how lessons learnt from studying volcanic activity on the present-day planet can give us insights into some of the most profound environmental changes in geological history including major perturbations to Earth's past carbon cycle and mass extinction events.

Bio:

Tamsin Mather is a volcanologist and investigates volcanoes and volcanic behaviour using a combination of atmospheric chemistry, physical volcanology, paleoclimatology, and stratigraphy. Tamsin has been a Professor at the University of Oxford since 2014 leading and participating in a number of major projects focusing on volcanic plumes, rift volcanism, volcano climatology and more. Tamsin is also the current Chair of the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group (VMSG), a joint special interest group of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain & Ireland & the Geological Society of London.
