We are pleased to host Fernando Borras for a HotStuff seminar on: Drones for Geology, using Unmanned Aerial and Submarine Vehicles for volcanological exploration.

Abstract:

The development of affordable and compact UAV’s and ROV’s has proven these technologies as game changer in many fields as they mainly mean that the risk of endangering human lives in many challenging works can be drastically reduced. Applying these technologies to earth sciences we could obtain the same result as we have seen in recent cases related to volcanology such as La Palma Tajogaite 2021 eruption.

Drones for Geology is a newborn geological consultancy business created during pandemic times in summer 2020 with the aim to add value combining these two technologies with geological knowledge. Its work consists into going to the field and obtaining different kinds of data which after processing and analyzing allows to perform studies on physical or chemical factors of the environment as well as qualitative and quantitative results. Nowadays, it is creating a network of technologies, techniques and professionals to bring cutting edge workflows to earth sciences. In this talk, case studies, technologies and fresh ideas regarding geological exploration in challenging natural environments related with volcanoes and volcanology will be presented.

All staff and students welcome.
