We are pleased to announce Catherine Annen will be speaking at our next HotStuff seminar on the topic of: Tempos of magma flow in the upper crust and the formation of shallow magma chambers.
Abstract:
The flow of magma that build igneous bodies in the upper crust is discontinuous and follow cycles that reflect the cyclicity of volcanic eruptions at the Earth’s surface. Because of heat loss in the cold upper crust, shallow magma chambers only grow during episodes of high magma flow. Large silicic magma chambers that feed caldera-forming eruptions and Mafic Layered Intrusions like Skaergaard that are associated to Large Igneous Provinces are outliers in terms of magma flows, which poses the question of the underlying mechanisms that control the transfer of magma in the upper crust.
