Workshop: Enhancing PGR Supervisory Relationships

Various dates, online and in-person
Looking to deepen your impact as an experienced PGR supervisor? This collaborative, discussion-based workshop led by the Academic Directors, PGR is your opportunity to engage with real-world, anonymised Faculty-specific case studies, share your supervisory strategies and experiences with peers, and explore the complexities of supervisory relationships in a supportive, peer-led environment.

Workshop: Developing PGR Supervisory Relationships

Various dates, online and in-person

Sign up to a faculty-specific workshop to support supervisory relationships, delivered by Faculty Academic Directors (PGR), covering:

  • diversity of PGR cohorts and different approaches to supervisory relations
  • assumptions made by students and supervisors, and how to manage expectations
  • challenges in the supervisory relationship and how to seek help in overcoming them

For new supervisors/those new to supervising at Bristol the workshop is:

  • required in the Faculties of Health and Life Sciences and Arts, Law and Social Sciences. 
  • strongly recommended in the Faculty of Science and Engineering

Supervisors with more experience are also strongly encouraged to attend the workshop to benefit from a community of practice and networking with peers.

Information session: Sexual Violence Support Service


Tuesday 4 November, 15:00-16:00, in person (PGR Hub, Senate House) and online

Supervisors and other staff working with PGRs are invited to attend this information session on support provided to students by the Sexual Violence Support Service. 
The session will enable staff who support PGRs to feel equipped to signpost to the service, should they need to. This session will be delivered in person at the PGR Hub and online via Teams. 
(Note: We recognise that this subject matter can be difficult for some, so we want to reassure you that the session will not include discussing sexual violence examples explicitly.  Slides will be shared afterwards for anyone who would rather receive the information this way.)

Workshop: Supervising International PGR Students


Wednesday 3 December, 14:30-16:00, in person (Ada Lovelace Seminar Room 4)

This pilot workshop will include the latest research and information on international students, understanding intercultural differences, practical tips, as well as opportunity for supervisors to share their experience and strategies with colleagues.


The workshop will be led by Gosia Drewniok (Assistant Director, International Student Success).

Postgraduate Research Supervisor Symposium


15 January, 13:00-16:30, followed by networking, 16:30-17:30 (optional) 

Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching are inviting contributions for the upcoming PGR Supervisor Symposium – an exciting, interdisciplinary event celebrating excellence and innovation in postgraduate research supervision. Submissions are invited for:

  • Case studies – explorations of specific supervisory innovations or challenges and how they were addressed (up to 10 minutes)
  • Lightning presentations – concise, engaging talks (up to 5 minutes) to share impactful ideas or tools.
  • Posters – visual presentations of projects, initiatives, or resources that support excellent supervision.

Express your interest or submit a proposal
