A growing range of in-person and online events and workshops to enhance and support your supervisory practice are curated by colleagues from faculties, the Bristol Doctoral College and Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching.

Supervising international PGR students (workshop)
Thursday 5 March, 1:30 pm to 3 pm / Wednesday 10 June, 3 pm to 4:30 pm
Following out pilot workshop, we will be offering further sessions in 2026 with guidance on supervising international PGR students. These workshops will include the latest research and information on international students, understanding intercultural differences, practical tips, as well as opportunity for supervisors to share their experience and strategies with colleagues.
The workshop will be led by Gosia Drewniok (Assistant Director, International Student Success).

Monday 16 March, 11 am to 12 pm
This workshop is for academic colleagues who are new to the University of Bristol and have existing supervisory experience and/or for new supervisors. It offers an overview of Bristol's institutional processes, policies and support structures for postgraduate research supervision. Attendance will help you navigate your new environment effectively and continue developing as a supervisor within Bristol's research community.
Team supervision workshop
Wednesday 24 June, 11 am to 12 pm, online
This one hour online workshop will offer participants the opportunity to explore collaborative approaches to supervision and the role of the co-supervisor. This session is part of a pilot activity in the Next Generation Research Supervision Project (RSVP). Those who sign up will be sent a participant information sheet and a consent form, so that their feedback can be used to contribute to the Next Generation Research Supervision Project (RSVP) Piloting Programme.

Enhancing PGR supervisory relationships: critical challenges and complex cases (workshop)

Looking to deepen your impact as an experienced PGR supervisor? This collaborative, discussion-based workshop led by the Faculty Academic Directors (PGR) is your opportunity to engage with real-world, anonymised, Faculty-specific case studies, share your supervisory strategies and experiences with peers, and explore the complexities of supervisory relationships in a supportive, peer-led environment.

Developing PGR supervisory relationships: an introduction to supervisory practice (workshop)
Various dates, online and in-person
Sign up to a Faculty-specific workshop to support supervisory relationships, delivered by Faculty Academic Directors (PGR), covering:
- diversity of PGR cohorts and different approaches to supervisory relations
- assumptions made by students and supervisors, and how to manage expectations
- challenges in the supervisory relationship and how to seek help in overcoming them
For new supervisors (supervisors new to supervision with no completions as main supervisor) and for those new to supervising at Bristol (irrespective of the number of completions elsewhere) the workshop is:
- required in the Faculties of Health and Life Sciences, and Arts, Law and Social Sciences
- strongly recommended in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Supervisors with more experience are also strongly encouraged to attend the workshop to benefit from a community of practice and networking with peers.

Supporting student mental health and wellbeing (asynchronous, e-learning module)
Developed by the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, this new e-learning package is designed to give non-specialist staff the skills, knowledge and confidence to offer a first line of support to students who may have mental health issues.
It is recommended that all staff complete this module annually.
Enrol through Develop (Please note: you must "book your place" in Develop and you will be directed to create an account on the Charlie Waller website. This will give you access to the materials, and you can then return to Develop to take the test once you have completed the training.
