Coronavirus (COVID-19) statistics

Our priority is the health and safety of our staff, students and community. We are working hard to provide up-to-date advice, guidance and support.

Positive test results

We have a community of almost 28,000 students and 7,000 staff. These figures show the new positive test results of COVID-19 across our community.

Data includes those both on and off campus and does not indicate where the virus might have been contracted.

Our daily statistics, which show the number of recorded cases, are primarily based on reports from students and staff themselves. This data is then reinforced and occasionally added to by Public Health England (PHE); this enables us to continue to present as accurate a position as possible but can result in some daily numbers being readjusted retrospectively. Most recent adjustment: 25 November.

What to do if you have symptoms or have to self-isolate

Students or staff who:

  • have symptoms of COVID-19
  • have received a positive test result or
  • who are required to self-isolate for another reason

should notify the University. This helps minimise the risk to others and keep everyone safe.

If you have symptoms of coronavirus you, and all members of your household, must self-isolate until you have your test results.

Testing and contact tracing

We have provided two free mobile testing units for exclusive use of all our staff and students and have access to a local NHS testing site located at the Victoria Rooms.

What happens when we receive a report of a positive test of a member of our University community

If we are informed of a positive COVID-19 test we:

  1. follow detailed processes and procedures to reduce onward transmission
  2. communicate with relevant staff and students
  3. put in place procedures such as deep cleaning of affected areas where appropriate

We expect the person who has tested positive to self-isolate with their household in line with government guidelines.

Support for students and staff who are self-isolating


We understand self-isolating is not easy and have put in place a range of measures to provide practical and wellbeing support. Tell us using our self-reporting form so we can provide the right support.

Read our self-isolation guidance for students which provides practical information, wellbeing and academic support. Our support can include food and medication deliveries, laundry and cleaning support, as well as support for wellbeing and study.

You can access wellbeing services while isolating. All students have access to 24/7 wellbeing support through Togetherall.

Managers will keep in contact during this period and plan their return to work when they are able to come back.

We have a range of mental health and wellbeing support available including the Employee Assistance Programme and Staff Counselling Service.

We are in regular contact with Bristol City Council, local public health officials and other partners to ensure we are sharing information about the local situation and responding to the latest guidance.

What plans we have in place to manage an outbreak

We are working with Bristol City Council's public health team and Public Health England to manage potential infection clusters and outbreaks.

We meet and communicate regularly with:

  • Bristol City Council
  • University of West England
  • local NHS trusts
  • other colleagues from across the city to check and review plans.

A University Outbreak Response Team has been set up. This team will coordinate action for clusters or outbreaks of Covid-19 infection. Arrangements are in place for out-of-hours escalation if this is needed.

Alert levels and tiers of intervention

The Government has introduced a COVID-19 contain framework. This sets out how national and local partners will work with the public at a local level to prevent, contain and manage outbreaks.

The Department for Education’s (DfE) Higher Education: reopening buildings and campuses guidance sets out expectations about the implications of different Tiers of Intervention for Higher Education Institutions and the suggested response by institutions.

We have developed comprehensive plans to respond to each Tier of Intervention if required. We have shared these plans with local public health colleagues.

Our Senior Leadership Team and dedicated response teams will consider specific outbreaks or interventions. They will assess the circumstances and make changes at the University which adhere to the DfE framework.

We will tell students and staff quickly if any changes to learning or teaching are required. We will provide this information using our official communication channels.
