2018 Cohort
- Tim Aldhous (MChem)Graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2018. His final year project involved investigating Naloxone-based degradation products in Suboxone sublingual film under the supervision of Professor Joseph Harrity. During his third year, he undertook an industrial placement at Bayer CropScience in Germany synthesising small molecules for agrochemical research.
- Daniel Austin (MChem)Graduated from the University of Reading in 2018. In his final year he worked under the supervision of Professor Laurence Harwood on the synthesis of a magnetic nanoparticle-immobilised caesium selective ligand for use in nuclear waste reprocessing.
- James Bowen (MSci)Graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2018. His final year was spent under the supervision of Dr. Paul Davies investigating the use of gold catalysis for the formation of complex three-dimensional scaffolds. During his third year he worked as a medicinal chemist at GSK in Stevenage.
- Kate Ellis-Sawyer (MChem)Graduated from the University of Bath in 2016. During her final year project she worked with Dr Simon Lewis on the total synthesis of the natural products pleiogenone A, B and C which have anti-cancer activity. After graduation Kate worked for two years at AstraZeneca in Sweden in early stage drug discovery.
- Simon Johnson (MSci)Graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2018. In his final year, he worked with Dr Liam Cox on furthering research into his class of glycolipid small molecule immune system regulators for a therapeutic benefit. During his third year, from 2016-17, Simon carried out an industrial placement at Roche in Basel, Switzerland, synthesising novel small molecules for a new druggable target.
- Hao Lan (MRes)Graduated from Imperial College London in 2018, with a bachelor’s degree in Sheffield before. In his one-year master of research, he worked under the supervision of Prof Matt Fuchter on medicinal chemistry about Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs) for degrading a certain epigenetic protein as the treatment of Leukemia, collaborated with AstraZeneca.
- Aidan McfordGraduated from the University of Bristol in 2018. During his final year project, he worked with Dr. Chris Russell on the synthesis of novel Au(I) complexes for homogeneous catalysis. In 2018 he completed a summer placement with Prof. Carmen Galan on bio-inspired probes for antimicrobials. Aidan has previously worked with Prof. Duncan Wass on biofuel catalysis and Prof. Fred Manby on modelling rubredoxin complexes.
- Rachel Nuttall (MSci)Graduated from the University of Bristol in 2017. In her final year project, she worked under the supervision of Professor Chris Willis on synthesising analogues of the natural product blepharocalyxin D, specifically incorporating protected alcohols onto the bicyclic core to enable future derivatisation.
- Jack Rogers (MChem)Graduated from the University of Oxford in 2018. In his final year, he worked with Prof. Darren Dixon on the development of chemoselective reductive functionalisation reactions using heterogeneous iridium catalysis.
- Ellie StammersGraduated from the University of York in 2018. During her final year, she worked at Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel, under the supervision of Dr Daniel Hunziker on the optimisation of drug compounds for the use in various cancer treatments, and an early stage ophthalmology project.
- Jasper Tyler (MChem)Graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2018, receiving the Haworth medal in Chemistry. During his third year, he undertook a placement at the University of Sydney, working on the Open Source Malaria Project with Prof. Matthew Todd, developing novel routes towards the synthesis of a potent series of antimalarials. In his final year, he worked in the research group of Prof. Joseph Harrity on the synthesis of isoquiolines utilising 6π-electrocyclisation reactions of conjugated hydrazones.
