Aerosol instrumentation
The Bristol Aerosols and Colloids Instrument Centre houses a wide range of commercially available instrumentation for aerosol measurement. These instruments include atomizers, particle counters, and particle sizers.
- Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (TSI 3321)The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) measures the aerodynamic size distributions of particles in the 0.5-20 μm diameter size range. BACIC has four APS instruments.
- Optical Particle Sizer (TSI 3330)The Optical Particle Sizer (OPS) measures the optical size distributions of particles in the aerosols 0.3-10 μm diameter size range. BACIC has four OPS instruments.
- Handheld Condensation Particle Counter (TSI 3007)This light, handheld Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) measures the number concentration of particles 0.01 to >1.0 µm. BACIC has three handheld CPCs.
- NanoScan (TSI 3910)The NanoScan is compact and portable and can measure aerosol size distributions in the 10-420 nm diameter size range.
- Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (TSI 3938)The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) consists of an electrostatic classifier, differential mobility analyser, and condensation particle counter. Depending on the setup it can measure the size distributions of aerosol from 3 nm to 1 μm diameter with high resolution.
- Electrostatic Classifier (TSI 3082)The Electrostatic Classifier is used to help size submicron particles and produce monodisperse aerosol flows. BACIC has two Electrostatic Classifiers.
- Differential Mobility Analyser (TSI 3081A)The Differential Mobility Analyser (DMA) is a key component of the electrostatic classifier and the SMPS. This DMA can size-select particles in the 10-1000 nm diameter size range.
- Differential Mobility Analyser (TSI 3085A)This DMA can size-select particles in the 2-150 nm diameter size range.
- Butanol Condensation Particle Counter (TSI 3756)A Condensation Particle Counter grows particles in a supersaturated vapour and then counts them. This instrument uses butanol as its working fluid and can count particles down to 10 nm diameter.
- Water Condensation Particle Counter (TSI 3789)This Condensation Particle Counter can count particles down to 2 nm diameter.
- Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (Cambustion AAC)The Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) can classify aerosol from 25 nm to >5000 nm on the basis of their aerodynamic diameter.
- Aerosol Optical Tweezers (Biral AOT-100)The AOT-100 allows users to trap single droplets in the 5-20 μm diameter size range for extended periods of time. The droplet’s size and refractive index are precisely retrieved. This instrument can be used for a range of applications, including measuring aerosol hygroscopic response.
- Constant Output Atomizer (TSI 3076)The constant output atomizer stably generates polydisperse aerosol from solution.
- Portable Test Aerosol Generator (TSI 3073)This compact atomizer generates polydisperse aerosol from solution.
