Overview - Academic Summer School
Opportunity: 7 week summer school at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) in China.
Dates: 11 June - 2 August 2026.
Location: Guangzhou, China.
Eligibility: Non-final year undergraduate students who do not hold a China or Hong Kong passport.
Cost: Programme fee is £850. See below for other additional costs.

- Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering
- Robotics and Autonomous Systems
- Smart Manufacturing
- Urban Governance and Design
You will be able to select up to 5 courses during the application process and will ultimately be enrolled in a maximum of 3.
To read more details of each course, visit the website and choose "credit-bearing courses". All options are listed and link to their syllabus. Remember that the University of Bristol does not allow credit transfer so feel free to choose any topic / study level, bearing in mind any pre-requisites.
Eligibility
10 nominated places are reserved for:
- Undergraduates (not in their final year) who don't have a China or Hong Kong passport.
- Courses will be taught in English so there are no language requirements.
Students who do not meet these criteria can apply to HKUST (GZ) independently and self-fund their activity.
Costs
- The tuition fee is usually around £1,830.
- The programme fee is £850 which covers accommodation and some activities.
- Return flights to China from the UK are usually around £800 and the visa is likely to be under £150. You will need to arrange your own travel and visa.
- You will need some money for your meals, any extra activities/travel/souvenirs, as well as travel accessories such as luggage, sim cards etc.
- Successful students will be eligible for free UOB travel insurance.
Funding
- The tuition fee is waived (free!) for all successful students who apply via our team.
- Successful home students with a UOB bursary and/or Bristol Scholars will receive a £1,029 grant (for their programme fee and other expenses) as well as a £905 travel grant (for their flights and internal travel).
- Successful students (either home or international) who do not meet this criteria will receive a £833 grant to use towards their programme fee.
Accommodation
Students will have their own room in shared, modern dormitories which are similar to the UK. More information can be found here.
Application process
- Submit form below to be considered for nominated free space by 11.59pm Wed 4 Feb. It will ask you to provide an email for a staff member within the university who can provide a short reference.
- Students will be shortlisted and informed out the outcome by Fri 27 Feb.
- Successful students will then complete application to HKUST (GZ) by Sun 8 Mar.
- Students will be responsible for managing their application with HKUST (GZ) (e.g. meeting deadlines, staying informed of updates).
