Opportunity: 4 week summer school at PolyU in Hong Kong.

Eligibility: Non-final year undergraduate students who do not hold a China or Hong Kong passport.

PolyU is an internationally renowned university in the heart of Hong Kong.

Their 4 week summer school offers the option of studying across three academic themes. You’ll live in nearby university accommodation and have additional cultural visits and activities.

The themes are:

  1. Chinese Language, Culture and Society
  2. Science, Technology and Creative Design
  3. Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Global Impact

Each theme has a choice of 2 - 7 subjects within it (see website). You can take one subject only. Classes will either be 9-12pm or 2-5pm.

This programme will help you to:

  • Experience a place where Chinese culture mixes with British influences 
  • Learn from a new academic perspective
  • Develop your intercultural skills 

Eligibility

We have 10 'free' nominated spaces available for:

  • Undergraduates (not in their final year) who don't have a China or Hong Kong passport.
  • Courses will be taught in English so there are no language requirements.

Students who do not meet these criteria can apply to PolyU independently and self-fund their activity. 

Costs 

  • The usual programme fee is around £2130 which covers tuition, accommodation, and some activities during the programme. 
  • Nominated students only pay a £52 admin fee. 
  • Flights to Hong Kong from the UK usually start around £700. You will need to arrange your own travel and visa.
  • You will need to bring your own spending money for food, any extra activities/travel/souvenirs, as well as travel accessories such as luggage, sim cards etc. 
  • Nominated students will be eligible for free UOB travel insurance.

Funding

  • The programme fee is waived (free!) for successful students who apply via our team.
  • Successful home students with a UOB bursary and/or Bristol Scholars will also receive a £588 grant (to cover their admin fee and other expenses) as well as a £905 travel grant (for flights and internal travel). 
    • Successful students (either home or international) who do not meet this criteria will receive a £476 grant to use towards their admin fee and other expenses.

Accommodation

Students will have share a room in a university dormitory, which are similar to the UK. More information can be found here.

Application process 

  1. Submit form below to be considered for nominated free space by 11.59pm Sun 4 Feb. It will ask you to provide an email for a staff member within the university who can provide a short reference.
  2. Students will be shortlisted and informed of the outcome by Tues 24 Feb.
  3. We will nominate students to PolyU by Tues 10 Mar.
  4. Students will be responsible for managing their subsequent application with PolyU (e.g. meeting deadlines, staying informed of updates).
