SETsquared: Putting it into Context

Putting it into Context has been designed to support the communication of project/research results in an engaging and non-technical way.

About this event
Based on the successful #Idea2Pitch session delivered by the SETsquared Team, ‘Putting it into Context’ has been designed to support academic staff and researchers in communicating their project/research in an engaging and non-technical way.

This one-day workshop will provide a basic introduction to how to converse with external people who may know nothing about their research. It will introduce why clear communication is important & how to communicate both verbally and in writing with the types of people that will be encountered on their academic journey, including:

  • Peers
  • Professionals
  • The non-technical person
  • Collaborators
  • Industry
  • Government

During the session you will be introduced to the concept of the elevator pitch and the concept of distilling your research into the problem you are trying to solve, the solution and what you need for the future. You will then be given the chance to develop a 60 second elevator pitch for use in networking sessions, which describes your research and is easily understandable to get a conversation started.

Finally, the Attendees will look to write a non-technical description of your technology/research which you can use for your researcher profile, finding potential corporate partners or when speaking to those who may be interested in the commercial use of your research.

By the end of this session, you will have a clear understanding of how to put your research into context for a non-technical audience including an elevator pitch to clearly describe your research as well as a short non-technical description to use when engaging with others.
