The National Security & Investment Act entered into force in January 2022. It allows the government to intervene where anyone gains some control over entities (such as companies) or assets (including property and intellectual property) and the government believe that control could harm the UK's national security. Note that 'assets' includes intellectual property rights in the results of research work (such as copyright in articles, rights in datasets, or patentable inventions).
Although the powers in the Act are construed broadly the government has indicated that it expects to intervene only in exceptional cases.
The Research Contracts team are holding an information webinar on the Act and how its implications for synthetic biology.
