Supporting African-led development through research partnerships: Opportunities and challenges for the University of Bristol

18 May 2021, 12.00 PM - 18 May 2021, 1.00 PM

Professors Leon Tikly and Guy Howard (University of Bristol)

online

A panel discussion with the Global Challenge Chairs and the Director of the Perivoli Africa Research Centre (PARC).

Suited for early careers researchers and people interested in the areas of policy practice.

  • Professor Isabella Aboderin, PARC
  • Professor Susan Parnell, Global Chair (Urban Development)
  • Professor Leon Tikly, Global Chair (Education)
  • Professor Guy Howard, Global Chair (Environmental and Infrastructure Resilience)

The aim of the panel is to critically explore the opportunities and challenges for partnership working between African and UK based researchers in supporting African led development. It will do this by foregrounding  the perspectives of African partners working in the fields of engineering, sustainable cities and education and seeking to draw out the implications for future partnership working.

The proposed panel will include 3 key speakers from the African continent who will offer opening perspectives or provocations. These will be responded to by each of the three global chairs. Two early career researchers – one African based and one Bristol based will also be invited to share their perspectives. It is expected that provocations and responses through focusing on disciplinary specific issues will also surface more generic issues of partnership working.

Inputs by panel members will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. The audience will include researchers at all stages of their careers based in Bristol, the UK and Africa, who have an interest in African-led research and how their research might fit into the global context.

Professor Aboderin will be invited to provide some closing remarks, drawing together the main points to emerge and some of the implications for future partnership working between Bristol and Africa.
