BBI Webinar: Dr Francesca Ceroni & Dr Ciarán Kelly

15 June 2022, 1.00 PM - 15 June 2022, 2.00 PM

Online (Zoom)

We will be joined by two speakers for the June BBI webinar.

Dr Ciarán Kelly is Senior Vice Chancellor's Fellow in Molecular Biosciences in the Department of Applied Sciences at Northumbria University. His research interest is in harnessing the power of synthetic biology approaches and technologies to tackle the many crises facing the planet.

  • Title: Developing approaches to tackle stubborn impediments in the engineering of biology.
  • Abstract: Dr. Kelly's research group are focussed on developing novel solutions to tackle some of the current key limitations observed in engineering biology. This talk will discuss the lab's early approaches to: (1) control natural bacterial processes in natural settings; (2) build efficient metabolic pathways with many hard-to-produce, cofactor-containing enzymes AND challenging thermodynamics; and (3) reduce the inherent latency of engineered biological circuits.

Dr Francesca Ceroni is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on bacterial and mammalian synthetic biology towards biomedical applications and bioproduction.

  • Title: Development of tools for host-aware mammalian cell engineering.
  • Abstract: One of the topics Dr Ceroni's group at Imperial College is interested in is the design of tools for host-aware cell engineering. While much has been done in the context of bacterial cells, the understanding and characterisation of host-construct interactions in mammalian cells are still at the beginning. This talk will focus on their recent work on the design of tools for characterisation and measurement of resource competition and burden in mammalian systems.

  • Please log in a few minutes early to allow for any technical issues and joining instructions.
  • As an audience member you will be able to hear and see the speaker, hosts and chair, but you will not be able to use your own video and audio. Please use the Slido platform to pose questions.
  • There can be a slight lag, so the seminar may move at a slower pace.
  • If you notice any major issues please email k.sedgley@bristol.ac.uk or wayne.powell@bristol.ac.uk - we would also love your feedback post seminar.
