Pauline Fairclough Inaugural Lecture: The opera that Stalin walked out of
Victoria Rooms, Queens Road, Bristol, BS8 1SA
Inaugural lecture by Professor Pauline Fairclough, entitled:
"The opera that Stalin walked out of: Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the cold war and #MeToo"
Famous for being the opera that Stalin banned, Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth became a cold-war hit in the West from the 1980s on, with ever-more shocking productions guaranteed box-office success. But has its heady cocktail of sex, violence and murder gone too far, and was it really what Shostakovich wanted?
Professor Fairclough's lecture will begin at 6.15pm and will be followed by a drinks reception at 7.15pm.
