Can the academic study of music provide insights that can lead to a deeper understanding of human religious practices, frameworks, and aspirations – and vice versa? This seminar will present scholarship on musical theory and musical practice, and the intersections of this theory and practice with religious practice and theological speculation, over the course of European history, as a case study for exploring possible points of convergence and collaboration between musicology and religious studies. The main focus will be on ongoing research projects at the Department of Music, presented by Meg Rees, Melanie Shaffer, Thomas Phillips, Marcus Jones, and Emma Hornby, followed by a brief response by Sig Sønnesyn at RETH on the significance of music for medieval Christian theology. These presentations will serve as an invitation to a wider debate about the ways in which musicology and religious studies may benefit form exchanges of insights and perspectives.
