I deny you, but still miss you - Taekkyu Lee (1984-

New Music Ensemble includes the best players from across the university in unusual programmes celebrating recent music and music of our own time.  This semester’s offering features the seminal ‘Workers Union’ of Louis Andriessen, grandfather of the vibrant new music scene in Holland, and Dutch minimalism ‘with an edge’, who passed away last year. Composed for ‘any group of loud instruments’ in 1975, this is rhythmically oriented music at its finest.  This performance is dedicated to striking colleagues across the university resisting the commodification of education.  Taekkyu Lee’s ‘I deny you but still miss you’ takes a distinctly timbral approach to sound, with overtone singing throughout the piece by Lee himself, matched with unusual timbres from the ensemble combining to create a grainy palette of shifting colour and atmospheric, close harmonies.
