Partnership Event: London Branch Annual Lecture and AGM

The London Branch of the University of Bristol Alumni Association warmly invites alumni and friends to the Branch’s Annual Lecture.

This year's annual lecture will be given by Professor Alexander Betts (MSc 2003), Leopold Muller Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs at the University of Oxford.

In his lecture, titled 'British National Refugee Policy - what should it look like?', he will speak about the current challenges facing refugee protection around the world, including reflecting upon the migration consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Professor Betts said: 'Forced displacement is one of the global challenges of our time. Europe has recently seen significant refugee movements from Syria and Ukraine, and the UK faces unprecedented numbers of asylum seekers crossing the English Channel. In this lecture, I will aim to explore how the UK can and should respond – globally, nationally, and locally.'

Professor Betts is also a William Golding Senior Fellow in Politics at Brasenose College, and Associate Head of the Social Sciences Division at the University of Oxford. He has been named in Foreign Policy magazine’s top-100 global thinkers and his TED talks have been viewed by over 3 million people. He recently published the award-winning The Wealth of Refugees: How Displaced People Can Build Economies (Oxford University Press, 2021).

This event has been rescheduled from November 2022 to January 2023.
