Like many universities across the world, we have been exploring our history to understand our links and connections to the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans. As an institution, we acknowledge that we benefited indirectly via philanthropic support from individuals and families who had made money from businesses that were involved with the labour of enslaved peoples.

We want to understand how you think and feel about the building names across our University’s campus which are linked to those individuals. We would also appreciate your ideas on how we should acknowledge and represent our history on campus in ways that will help our university community and the wider public reflect together on these important issues.

This meeting is a chance to discuss our recently published research report which seeks to better understand our links and connections to historical slavery, or the labour of enslaved peoples; to give your thoughts on what should happen next; and to provide feedback on whether the University should be renaming its key buildings. Our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Evelyn Welch, will be joined on the panel by Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost Professor Judith Squires, Dr Richard Stone and Alicia O’Grady.

We will hold a live Q&A using Slido – both in-person and online participants can participate by joining the Slido event using the code #7116283.
