Celebrating 100 Years of Postgraduate Research

26 January 2022, 6.00 PM - 26 January 2022, 7.30 PM

The Great Hall, Wills Memorial Building, Queen's Road, Bristol, BS8 1QE

Join us to celebrate 100 years of postgraduate research at the University of Bristol.

We would like to extend an invitation to all our PGR alumni to celebrate the past, present and future of postgraduate research at the University of Bristol in the Great Hall at the Wills Memorial Building on the evening of Wednesday 26 January from 6 pm (GMT). Please book your place here.

From the first PhDs, awarded to Lily Batten and Leo Palmer in 1921, to the present day, we will be celebrating the exciting and diverse work of our postgraduate research community and looking to the future to imagine what the next 100 years of postgraduate research might hold.

The celebration event will be introduced by Professor Hugh Brady, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol.

During the evening we are pleased to be screening three short films exploring 100 years of the PhD at Bristol developed through a collaborative project supported by the Universities Brigstow Institute and the Development and Alumni Relations Office.

These films have been co-created by a team of current and now graduated PGRs and artist Bryony Gillard. The creative team will be sharing their experience of the project as part of a Q&A panel session. They will reflect on the impact that these early PhD pioneers had on Bristol and the wider world, and on their own experiences as researchers at the University in 2021.

This will be followed by a panel discussion on the 'Future of the PhD' which will look at how research degrees are evolving to meet current research needs, and how they may look in the next 100 years.

During the evening there will also be the opportunity to meet with other PGR alumni and to find out more about current research being undertaken by our PGRs in response to global challenges.

We hope you will be able to join us.

This event is organised by the Bristol Doctoral College.
