The Sleep Well Study
Sleep problems, such as difficulties with getting to or staying asleep, can result from mental health problems but can also cause poor mental health. Sleep problems are common when young people are feeling anxious or depressed. Sadly, many young people with mental health problems don’t get the support they need when these problems develop.
Project aims
We have created an online programme to help young people with sleep problems with the ultimate aim of improving their mental health.
Our aim is to offer the programme to 1,000 young people aged 14-18 years. The young people involved will help us test and improve our programme by using the online interventions below.
The Interventions
-
Sleep Solved
Developed with extensive input from young people and sleep experts, Sleep Solved is an online programme that gives young people information and advice on how to improve their sleep.
-
Phone Downtime
Designed by a PhD student from the University of Bristol, Phone Downtime estimates sleep disturbance based on the movement and screen on / off time of young people's mobile phones.
-
SHUTi
Created by researchers at the University of Virginia, SHUTi uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and has been proven to improve sleeping in adults. We will use a teen version of SHUTi with the hope that it can help them too.
-
Bite Back
Produced by the Black Dog institute based in Sydney, Australia, Bite Back is a self-guided online wellbeing and resilience program for young people.
-
Project YES
Project YES (Youth Empowerment and Support) is a website offering a choice of short sessions that have been shown to improve young people’s mental health, run by scientists at the Lab for Scalable Mental Health.
