Continued Fellowship Success for Diabetes and Metabolism!

Every two years, one prestigious Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation Non-Clinical Fellowship is awarded. This time the recipient of £179,774 is Dr Jody Ye, a postdoctoral researcher in the Diabetes and Metabolism Unit who was successful among a field of 39 applicants. This follows on from recent successes for the Diabetes and Metabolism Unit in highly competitive Fulbright and Diabetes UK Travel Fellowships. 

Dr Ye’s project will focus on how the environment is increasing the risk of childhood type 1 diabetes over multiple generations of the same families participating in the Bart’s Oxford family study, led by Dr Kathleen Gillespie. In collaboration with Professor Caroline Relton, School of Social and Clinical Medicine, and a team at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York led by Professor Yaron Tomer. Jody will investigate how DNA has been changed over time by increasing effects of the environment. Understanding these changes will help to identify new treatments for the condition which requires daily insulin injections.

Dr Ye said, 'I am delighted to have been awarded the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation 2016 Non-Clinical Fellowship. This is a really exciting opportunity for me; I am looking forward to starting my project in Bristol and learning new techniques in New York. I will work hard to prove worthy of the confidence the Foundation have shown in me’.
