Masterclass Series

THESE SESSIONS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE DURING 2016/2017

Educators for all health professions require a broad range of pedagogical approaches in order to deliver complex and extended curricula associated with clinical competency for example, patient safety, human factors, professional values and leadership.

TLHP are now able to offer a masterclass series that provide participants with an opportunity to examine in depth, contemporary issues in health care education that reflect increasing challenges for health care educators – patient safety, human factors, professionalism, leadership for example.

Each class will build on generic teaching skills and each will have learning outcomes that are mapped onto the Academy of Medical Educator’s Professional Standards.

Masterclass 1 - Using the world café technique in small group teaching

The world café technique is a vehicle for small group learning that is easy to apply, dynamic and powerful in stimulating learner discovery. This masterclass will build on participants’ experience of different modes of delivery to small groups and provide a facilitated experience of the World café approach so that participants can use it with confidence in their own teaching. The class will open with a brief recap of learner centred approaches before demonstrating the world café technique with the participants. This will enable them to explore their understanding of social learning and apply this novel method of teaching in their own practices.

Masterclass 2 - Preparing scenarios for teaching: principles of case based learning

This masterclass will explore the principles of case based learning (low fidelity simulation) and focus on how to write cases/scenarios to stimulate learning. Whether a curriculum is case based or not these are useful tools. Participants will review the definition of learning outcomes and apply these to writing a scenario/case for use with their own small groups.

Masterclass 3 - The art of giving formative feedback

This masterclass will focus on how to provide formative feedback to students drawing on the evidence base of the powerful impact of formative feedback on student learning, performance and progress. The participants will explore different ways of providing feedback, how to ensure students see its value, recognise how to link formative feedback to student progression towards summative feedback and how to increase student satisfaction (NSS targets)

Masterclass 4 - The role of the medical educator in the workplace: exploring options

This masterclass will focus on workplace based learning and examine some of the challenges. Using examples of evaluation tools drawn from the literature including the DREEM inventory, the participants will critically explore the clinical environments in which they teach, reflect on their roles as educators and devise strategies for promoting learning experiences in their own clinical environments.

Masterclass 5 - Using a narrative approach in teaching and learning; unpacking emotions

Students find the transition from classroom to bedside challenging, emotionally and practically. This masterclass will explore in more depth how a narrative pedagogy can be applied to students’ learning in the clinical environment, help identity formation and address the emotional burden of learning within a busy service-led NHS setting. This masterclass will also introduce participants to Action Learning as a means of using their own narratives to support personal and professional development.  This class will be scheduled for 4 hours to include time for participants to practice working in an action learning setting

All TLHP Masterclasses are free at the point of delivery to teachers of University of Bristol undergraduates.
