High performance wireless channel estimation

The invention concerns the design of a novel channel estimator that provides significant performance improvement over the least-squares channel estimator without the complexity disadvantages associated with other designs. The overall performance of a wireless receiver can be significantly improved at minimal cost in complexity.  The field of the invention is broadband wireless communication systems that utilize frequency-domain equalization (FDE) with localized subcarrier mapping. The FDE-based systems include orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), and single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA).
