Stallholder and produce

Buying fresh produce at the farmers' market

If you were wandering around the University precinct in the middle of June, you might have come across a number of brightly coloured market stalls, seen the exchange of organic and homemade produce, and heard the cheerful banter of stallholders and eager customers. All this would have been the sights and sounds of the farmers’ market, a new regular feature of the University calendar, offering staff, students and members of the public the chance to support local businesses and put into practice personal healthy lifestyle choices.

The farmers’ market is a great way of putting the ‘healthy university’ concept into practice. It’s also a great example of what can happen when different groups from across the University come together around a common goal.

Organised by the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health and the student campaigning society, Bristol University Sustainability Team (BUST), the farmers’ market encourages people to eat well, choosing fresh, seasonal food from local producers. The initiative contributes to the University’s healthy lifestyle and sustainability agendas, as well as enabling the local community to minimise the environmental impact of their purchases.

“The farmers’ market is a great way of putting the ‘healthy university’ concept into practice,” said Karen Harvey, Healthy Lifestyles Manager. “It’s also a great example of what can happen when different groups from across the University come together around a common goal.”

Open to all, the market sells a range of produce from pies and pasties, jams and chutneys, cakes and biscuits, fish, locally produced cheeses and meat, as well as the usual organic fruit and vegetables. It is going to take place on a monthly basis, so get your shopping bags at the ready!
