What is Active for Life Year 5?

Active for Life Year 5 is a research study to find out how to help Year 5 children eat healthy food and be active.

Why is it called Active for Life Year 5 when I was measured in Year 4?

Active for Life follows children from the end of Year 4, up until the end of Year 6. The project is called ‘Active for Life Year 5’ as Year 5 is when most of the work happens.

Do I have to take part?

No. It is completely up to you whether you take part. You can even choose to do some bits and not others. When the team come to your school, they will ask you to complete a form asking which bits you would like to take part in. No one will mind if you don’t want to take part.

I want to take part, but don’t want my friends to know my measurements.

That is fine. We won’t show your friends, your teachers or your parents your measurements. They will only be used by the researchers.

I joined the school recently, am I allowed to join the study?

Of course you can! Make sure you ask your teacher to let us know that you have joined the school, that way we can send you and your parents the information you need prior to our visit.

I’m going away for the weekend, can I take my accelerometer with me?

Yes, take it with you and continue to wear it as much as possible. Look after it carefully and remember to bring it back with you.

I go to swimming club before school on Tuesdays, should I wear my belt?

No, the belts are not waterproof so you need to take it off and put it in a safe place while you are swimming (leave it with your clothes, or in your swimming bag). When you are dry you should put your belt on and wear it as normal.

I play on a football team, can I wear my belt to football?

Yes, please wear your belt as much as possible. If your football coach tells you to take it off, that is ok, but if you explain that you are wearing it to help with research from Bristol University they may well let you wear it.

What happens to the measurements that you take?

The measurements are used by researchers from the University of Bristol. They will help us to understand how to help Y5 children stay active and eat a healthy diet.
