From population to sample

Learning Outcomes

On watching this video, students should be able to:

  1. Confirm that that aspects of good study design include defining the research question, defining the target population, and using an appropriate sampling process.
  2. Discuss how random sampling is connected to the idea of representativeness and confirm that in order to make valid inference or draw valid conclusions in certain studies, sampling must be done in a way that maximises representativeness or ensures that the population and sample can be connected.
  3. State that the gold standard for a random sample is one where all individuals can be assigned a number in a finite population and a proportion of the numbers are randomly selected but explain that in reality this is rarely possible so the idea of representativeness can be seen as good enough.
