What I do nationally
- National Coordinating Centre for Beacons of Public Engagement – University of Bristol and University of the West of England won the bid to run the NCCPE. I support the centre’s work, chair the Management Group and sit on the Board.
- 'Sciencewise' Strategy Group - Chair of independent advisory group which oversees a government programme (run from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills) aiming to increase and improve public dialogue on science and technology across Government Departments and Agencies.
- ‘Science for All’ – Chair of sub-group on Structures and processes for public participation: trying to ensure that public perspectives are sought, recognised and responded to by the scientific and policy communities appropriately. Aim: the scientific and policy communities to have processes and structures in place that involve publics appropriately, that help them make better decisions.
- Council for Science and Technology (CST) - Member of the UK government's top-level advisory body on science and technology policy issues.
- EPSRC’s Societal Issues Panel - Member of advisory group which aims to shift the culture in this funding body, to consider societal and ethical issues in all areas of their business.
- EPSRC’s Strategic Advisory Team - Member of advisory team for public engagement.
- Times Cheltenham Festival of Science – Co-director and helped to create the festival in 2002.
- NESTA Famelab – Helped create and champion this national competition which talent spots, nurtures and trains new people in science communication. Helping to train the finalists. Check out their showreels... they’re impressive. Since 2005.
- ExploreAtBristol – Board member (and from 1995-2001 helped to create Explore’s content, as Head of Science).
- NESTA – Trustee, since 2006.
- Nanomed Roundtable - European Nanotechnology discussion and advisory group.
