Engagement at Bristol
Professor of Sciences and Society at the University of Bristol - Championing Public Engagement
- Engaged University Steering Group – which oversees public engagement, and keeps it high on the University’s agenda. Members come from across faculties and activities, and from outside the University. We are committed to being an ‘Engaged University’, and this is now reflected in our University Plan and strategy documents. We hold External EUSG fora, working with a wide range of external organizations, to help tackle issues relevant to the city, and to help us work and think better.
- Centre for Public Engagement – I help to steer, advise and support the Centre for Public Engagement.
- SEARCH – overseeing and participating in this action-learning and research project, helping individual scientists from across the country shift the culture in their Universities to better support public engagement.
- Communicate Conference – international conference in Bristol that brings together communicators of environmental issues, whether from broadcasting, visitor attractions, universities, media, or policy-making, to share good practice and learn about communicating better. Chair and member of steering group.
- Bristol Festival of Nature – run by the Bristol Natural History Consortium, attracting over 30 000 people to the Harbourside every June. Steering group member.
- Engage 2009 - internal conference to celebrate and share good practice in public engagement, run by the CPE.
- Science Alive! – every 2 years in the Galleries Shopping Mall we take about 20 stalls to share latest research from across faculties with the public and schoolchildren.
- Public engagement stories – helping to celebrate great engagement stories.
