IAS Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor: Elisa Marti-Lopez

Elisa Martí-López has a Llicenciatura in History from the Universitat de Barcelona and a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from New York University. She has been an Associate Professor with tenure at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Northwestern University, since Sept. 2002. She was a visiting Professor at the University of Chicago in 2003 and 2006 (teaching courses on Romanticism and Realism).

During her time in Bristol Professor Martí-López will work on her project The Urban Spaces of Death: Cemeteries as Narratives of the Modern City 1780-1918, which focuses on cemeteries as spatial narratives of cities. She will use the time in Bristol to explore the Arnos Vale cemetery and to investigate Bristol’s 19th-century processes of modernization as comparative sites for the study.
