Pens and markers

Using the internal mail, send used pens to Sustainability in an envelope clearly marked ‘pen recycling’. Only send pens if they are intact and not leaking. Large amounts of pens generated from an office move can be collected by Sustainability. Contact sustainability-estates@bristol.ac.uk for a collection.

We can recycle:

  • Pens
  • Felt tips
  • Highlighters
  • Markers – flip chart, whiteboard, permanent
  • Mechanical pencils
  • Correction instruments (tape and fluid pots)
  • Fountain pens
  • Ink cartridges for fountain pens

We can’t recycle:

  • Glue sticks
  • Rulers
  • Pencils (wooden)
  • Crayons
  • Sharp objects

TerraCycle® and BIC® have partnered to create The Writing Instruments Recycling Programme. This recycling program provides not only environmental benefits from recycling plastic stationary, but is also a fundraising opportunity. As an incentive to recycle pens and markers, all writing instruments sent for recycling are weighed and converted into rewards. The rewards are redeemed for a variety of charitable gifts, product bundles or for a payment to any non-profit organization. Sustainability are supporting a Bristol adult literacy charity, Youth Education Service, with the rewards gained from the University’s pen recycling.
