Definitions:
- Publication: joint publications between University of Bristol staff and staff from a non-UK institute. These have been sourced from the ISI Web of Knowledge, which focuses on scientific publications, so the full range of collaborative publications in the arts and humanities, and social sciences, may not have been captured.
- Project: a research project where the University of Bristol is working with a partner in a non-UK university.

Only formal links recorded on one of the University's systems have been gathered. In common with other universities, Bristol has many other informal links with non-UK universities and research institutes
Figures relate to the number of relationships rather than the number of actual collaborations. For example, one publication may be counted several times if it has links to several countries.
Several types of link may represent overlapping parts of one process or relationship. For example, collaborative work could be followed by a joint project and then a joint publication.
