Grounds team

Grounds operate two mobile teams of professional Groundsman, with the responsibility of maintaining lawns, hard surfaces and signage across much of the University estate and one mobile team of professional stone masons, responsible for the creation and maintenance of external walls and features. The Grounds Manager has overall responsibility for the teams and instructing external contractors.

On a seasonal and rotational basis, formal lawns and wild flower meadows are cultivated accordingly. Within the Precinct area litter collections and weed control are a priority, whilst hard surfaces, walls and steps are surveyed; the results of which identify issues and are systematically resolved by our team of stone masons. The Grounds team carries out the following grounds care operations, seasonally, in accordance to the service level agreement. Operations are carried out with the guidance of the Institute of Groundsmanship Safe Systems of Work.

Gardens and Grounds benefit from the support of an in house mechanic and fitter. Based at our workshop at Waltham Cottage Yard, maintenance and service is carried out on our comprehensive range of horticultural machinery and tools. Our mechanic also maintains and adapts our fleet of vehicles to suit seasonal operations, and repairs benches, plaques, signage etc. Occasionally fabrication of external features is required, such as the metal framework supporting the Wisteria at Clifton Hill House, replaced in 2015. Our Mechanic was nominated for an Environmental Hero award at the 2016 NUS Green Impact Awards for his conscientious efforts in sustainably managing the departments resources.

A new wash down bay outside our workshop was installed using the ClearWater system in 2014. Contaminated water from the wash down area is cleaned for re-use using micro-organisms. This below ground system aids the reduction of our water consumption and reduces pollution.

Annually, the team visit the Institute of Groundsmanship SALTEX Exhibition at the Birmingham NEC. This is an opportunity to engage with industry experts and suppliers, keeping up to date with the latest innovations in grounds care.
