Administration of undergraduate and taught postgraduate external examiners is now being undertaken by the Education Support Unit.
External Examiners for Research Students are appointed individually for each student via the 'Appointment of Research Degree Examiners' form. The Examiners are approved by the Head of Department, and by the Graduate Dean, on behalf of Faculty. Once approved, external examiners are sent a 'Letter of Appointment', together with an expenses claim form and the work to be examined, by the Examinations Office.
The completed expenses claim should be sent directly to the students' Department, for authorisation. Once authorised, Departments can send the forms directly to the Finance Office for payment. There is no requirement for the Examinations Office to approve these claims.
The formulae used for the payment of fees are reviewed and approved by the University Planning and Resources Committee (UPARC) and reviewed every three years.
