CRICBristol Annual Lecture 2018
13 September 2018
CRICBristol is pleased to announce that Professor Paul Matthews, Head of Brain Sciences at Imperial College, London, will be the keynote speaker at the CRICBristol Annual Lecture 2018.
The event is to be held in room 1.40 Pugsley Theatre in the Queens Building, University of Bristol from 4.30pm - 5.30pm on Monday, 19th November.
The title of the talk is “Exploring the transition from susceptibility to disease for late onset sporadic Alzheimer’s disease”
Aging, environmental and lifestyle exposures and genetic factors interact to trigger the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. This seminar will provide a brief overview of work being conducted in the UK Dementia Research Institute at Imperial College to discover cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible. I will describe epidemiological studies supported by resources in the UK Biobank that suggest hypotheses regarding exposures or co-morbidities playing dominant roles. Potential effects of molecules derived from microbiome and systemic metabolic dysfunction in mediating some of this will be described. New work characterising the loss of homeostatic plasticity in susceptible neurons in response to insults of these types will be outlined. Finally, I will describe work exploring how neuroinflammatory mechanisms may both help to maintain normal brain function and contribute to neurodegenerative changes. Implications of these lines of inquiry for future new therapeutics discovery then will be discussed by way of summary.
