MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences

Applications are invited from science graduates to study for the MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences. The course is run jointly by the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Bristol and the Bristol Institute of Transfusion Sciences. The course starts in October and can be studied full-time for 1 year or part-time over 2 or 3 years by block release.
The course aims to develop your interest, knowledge and understanding of the theory, practical techniques and research relating to the science of transplantation and transfusion medicine.
Subjects studied include:
- How is blood processed?
- When are platelet transfusions indicated?
- How is tissue engineering being used to replace heart valves?
- What causes haemolytic anaemia?
- What measures reduce the transfusion related risk of HIV and vCJD?
Teaching combines informal lectures, tutorials, practical laboratory experience and a research project with the bias on transfusion.
The lecture units are: Haemopoiesis, Immunology, Platelets and coagulation, Blood groups, Haematological diseases, Blood donation, Blood components, Clinical transfusion, Transfusion transmitted infections, Stem cell transplantation, Solid organ transplantation and Tissue engineering.
The course is directed by Dr Tricia Denning-Kendall.
