22 June 2011Bettina Urban, one of our PhD students, has received an award that recognizes non-academic engagement in the Bristol community, it is awarded in association with the Bristol Evening Post.
Bettina received the award during the Union Award ceremony on the 21st June. The Evening Post had featured an article and people from all over Bristol were invited to vote who should receive the award.

Bettina is the chair of Student Community Action (SCA) this year and also will be the elected Volunteer Development Officer next year. The SCA is the volunteering society of the Union which organizes projects in Bristol; such as painting and decorating the homes of disabled people, low-income families and community centres.
They also organises the Big GIVE in association with UoB Sustainability. This is a scheme to collect unwanted items from students at the end of term for redistribution to local charities. Bettina does further work with young adults with learning disabilities and was also involved in organizing fundraising events such as speed dating for students, the Community Dinner Dance (an evening of food and entertainment for the elderly and disabled people in Bristol), Kids Christmas Party (an afternoon for 300 children from low-income families in Brisol, where she was Mrs Santa Claus). She is also involved in training students as part of the Union's training team.
