The Centre for Communications Research (CCR) is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary Research Centre established in 1987 by Professor Joe McGeehan CBE DEng FREng. It was established in 1987 as one of the first University Research Centres and its template for structure and operation across departmental and faculty boundaries has been adopted across the world by other leading research universities. It is associated with the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The mission of the Centre for Communications Research (CCR) is to provide an environment in which research and postgraduate training of the highest calibre can be undertaken. Through consultation and collaboration with industry, the CCR delivers solutions to current and future market needs that are innovative, cost-effective and practical. The Centre has grown rapidly over the years and as part of its interdisciplinary nature works closely with Mathematics, Experimental Psychology, Medical Sciences, Chemistry and Medical Physics.

The CCR provides:

The Centre has grown rapidly over the years and its interdisciplinary method of working has proven to be highly successful, both in terms of core communication research themes and application areas. Given the breadth of the CCR’s expertise, it is often referred to as a ‘one-stop shop’ for telecoms research with researchers having access to the latest experimental and computational facilities. The Centre is home to approximately 120 researchers involved in the following areas:

Communications continues to be one of the fastest growing and most dynamic of all industries and the Centre for Communications Research (CCR) has played a key role in contributing to this growth through innovation. This is reflected in our record of research awards and increased exploitation profile over the years.

The CCR attracts significant levels of funding in excess of £3M per annum from both industry and funding organisations such as:

and collaborates on Government & European Commission initiatives such as:
