Funding

If you require information about financing a PhD or about Postgraduate Scholarships, please refer to: http://www.bris.ac.uk/studentfunding/. A short summary of this information is provided below. Please note that if you are applying to the School of Biochemistry’s PhD programme, funding decisions will be made in consultation with your proposed supervisor. In other words, you are not responsible for applying directly to funding bodies, except when applying to overseas funding agencies (e.g. funding from your home country).

The School of Biochemistry also accepts self-funded PhD students, provided that they meet the academic standards of the School and can find an appropriate supervisor.

1. UK ONLY: Most directly funded PhD projects are funded by UK Research Councils and hence, are open to home UK students only, unless otherwise stated.

2. EU applicants are eligible for all of our listed projects. Tuition fees will be paid for all successful EU candidates applying for a funded PhD studentship; however, some programmes have restrictions regarding the payment of maintenance stipends. In the case of MRC- and BBSRC-funded PhD studentships, tuition fees will be paid for EU applicants, but current regulations mean that we can only pay a maintenance stipend to students who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years before starting their PhD. This can include time spent in full-time education. You are advised to check specific eligibility requirements associated with funded PhD studentships and to contact the supervisor offering the project if you require further clarification of funding details.

3. UK/EU: The University offers a small number of competitive Postgraduate Research Scholarships for UK/EU students. For further information, please refer to: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/studentfunding/home_pg/schols.html

4. OVERSEAS: The University offers a small number of competitive University of Bristol Overseas Postgraduate Research Scholarships. For further information, please refer to: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/studentfunding/overseas_pg/overseas_schols.html

5. OTHER: Other options for funding your PhD study include obtaining Scholarships from your home country. For further information, please refer to: http://www.bris.ac.uk/studentfunding/add_funding/
