What does the Alumni Association do?

The Alumni Association plays an important role in helping to shape the future of our University by representing the views of its members, and contributing to building an engaged and supportive alumni community appropriate to a world class university.

Its influence and activities are pivotal in the development of both the global alumni community and the experience of Bristol’s students today.

Volunteer members are elected to serve on the Convocation and Alumni Association Committee, Court and the University’s Board of Trustees.

The Alumni Association, in close collaboration with the University’s Development and Alumni Relations office, organises a wide range of events – some social, some knowledge sharing, some celebratory. It is also committed to supporting alumni in their careers, and links closely with the University’s Careers Service to support mentoring and intern opportunities.

The Best of Bristol Alumni Weekend, held annually every July, is the biggest event in the Association’s calendar. The number of visiting alumni and family guests continue to grow year on year, and the packed programme on offer includes garden parties, Hall Association dinners, lunch with the Vice-Chancellor, lectures and visits to new developments within the University and the Convocation and Alumni Association’s own AGM.

The Alumni Association Annual Lecture features talks by prominent alumni on controversial or topical issues connected with the University of Bristol’s own world-leading research.

The Alumni Association Student Awards acknowledge achievements outside of academia at an event that offers alumni the chance of celebrating outstanding achievements by current students to the University and surrounding community, as well as recognizing extraordinary achievements by students who have overcome personal difficulties.

Alumni Association Medal

The Alumni Association Medal is awarded to recognise those who have conferred outstanding benefit upon Convocation by their service.

The Alumni Association is invited to make annual recommendations for the conferment of honorary degrees. For the most part, these are awarded to alumni.

Our alumni are important stakeholders in the future development of the University, and the views of the alumni community are valued and frequently sought by the executive. This importance is reflected in our representation on the University’s Board of Trustees.
